What Is Contemporary Art?

Art has often been thought to be a great masterpiece made years long gone. However, the art world has thrived and continuously adopted new styles. Art of the present and recent years is referred to as contemporary art, termed as the present art. In general, contemporary means recent or within our lifetimes; therefore, this type of art reflects the complex issues that shape our diverse global and rapidly changing world.

By redefining art and offering critics on social and institutional structures, contemporary art explores personal and cultural identity. Today, this form of art has changed and challenged our perspective and ideas about how art should be like and how it should behave. Various ways have been used to present contemporary art, including; visual art, theatre, music, moving images, dances, architecture, designs, new media, and many more hybrid forms.

When considering this type of art, defining or describing anyone’s standard style is challenging. Artists have approached their artwork in a multitude of ways. A wide array of media and materials may be used to portray a wide array of concepts, themes, and subject matter. While artists of the past were often influenced by religion, mythology, and their paying patrons’ demands, today’s artists can be inspired by much more. The work often grows out of their interests or expressions of self. Often the result may reflect their own culture, including current political climates and popular trends. However, with the ability to travel broadly and integrate much more than what is seen in their immediate world, art is increasingly global and diverse in its styles and themes.

Some of my favourite contemporary artists to check out are Takashi MurakamiJean-Michel Basquiat and David Hockney. Banksy, would undoubtedly be the most famous contemporary modern-day artist.
